What to do in the garden in January. We are seeding, planting and managing this in the vegetable garden on our permaculture farm in Portugal.
1. Planting seeds in the greenhouse
The only winter vegetables we plant now are onions, leeks & lettuce.
Some summer vegetables can be planted in seed trays in the greenhouse, ideally with heat mats; these seeds take longer to grow before planting. Mainly: tomatoes, chillis, eggplants, peppers
I like to plant various tomatoes, including those that need a trellis (indeterminate tomatoes) and those that don’t need a service (determinate tomatoes).
2. Direct seeding in the ground
Broad beans, peas, spinach, rocket & coriander can be directly planted in the ground
3. Growing out
January is very cold, and I often don’t have much luck finding stuff out, so I take a month off!
4. Maintenance tasks
- Tree Planting & Tree Pruning
- Cleaning Brush / Burning and Making Biochar
- Cutting Trees for Next Year’s Firewood
- FertiliYear’srees & Perennials with Compost
- Propagating Perennials, Taking Cuttings & Seeds
