1. Planting seeds in the greenhouse

  • Don’t forget to plant a succession of fast-growing vegetables, such as beets and lettuce. Better to plant a few each month and so many at once, and then you don’t know what to do with them.
  • By now, you should have all your vegetables started in seed trays for the summer. If you haven’t prepared them yet, consider buying seedlings and then repotting them into larger pots.

2. Direct seeding in the ground

  1. Continue planting things you want to harvest each month, such as Spinach, rocket, coriander, and radish
  2. Time to plant Potatoes, summer beans and sunflowers in the ground
  3. If you think the frost is over, plant pumpkins, squash, melons and watermelons in the ground. I don’t directly plant these seeds in my veg gardens, but I plant seeds in spare drippers on my irrigation lines in my food forests and agroforests.

3. Planting seedlings out

  1. In April, it is warming up, and I would be getting out a little bit of every vegetable that can survive a bit of frost so you can have an early harvest
  2. Plant out onions, leeks, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, dill and your summer flowers
  3. I like to get some onions in each month for a continuous harvest throughout the year. I prefer to eat fresh onions rather than stored ones.

4. Planting summer veg out

Whether you think the frost has ended in your area or if you have some covers to protect the vegetables, you can plant summer vegetables. There is a risk that they might die, but there’s also a chance of achieving better growth this year, as the plants can establish themselves before the heat and while the soil is still moist, which is beneficial before the summer drought.
