February in the garden and farm

What to do in the garden in February. We are seeding, planting and managing this in the vegetable garden on our permaculture farm in Portugal.

1. Planting seeds in the greenhouse

  • The only winter vegetables we plant now are onions, leeks, beetroots, chard, carrots & lettuce.
  • We plant brassica seeds even though the seed packets say to do it later in the year, we find we can get an early summer crop
Some summer vegetables can be planted in seed trays in the greenhouse, ideally with heat mats; these seeds take longer to grow before planting. Mainly: tomatoes, chillis, eggplants, peppers
  • I like to plant various tomatoes, including those that need a trellis (indeterminate tomatoes) and those that don’t need a service (determinate tomatoes).

2. Direct seeding in the ground

Spinach, rocket, coriander and carrots can be directly planted in the ground

3. Planting seedlings out

February is very cold and I don’t plant much out, maybe just lettuce and beetroot

4. Maintenance tasks

  • Tree Planting & Tree Pruning
  • Cleaning Brush / Burning and Making Biochar
  • Cutting Trees for Next Year’s Firewood
  • FertiliYear’srees & Perennials with Compost
  • Propagating Perennials, Taking Cuttings & Seeds
